There is a program that can shrink or erase a hospital bill, and most people who qualify for it never ask. Tax-exempt hospitals must publish a financial assistance policy, sometimes called charity care, and include a conspicuous notice about it on billing statements. Submit it and keep a dated copy of everything, along with the name of who you spoke to.
Follow up in writing if you do not hear back within a couple of weeks.
Timing: it is often not too late
Tax-exempt hospitals must allow at least 240 days from the first post-discharge bill to submit a financial assistance application. A hospital's own policy may allow more time. If a bill already feels overdue, check the policy and apply now rather than assuming the window has closed.
Assistance first, payment plan second
Keep the order right. Apply for financial assistance before you agree to a payment plan or reach for a credit card. A payment plan just splits the same total into installments, and a credit card can turn a medical bill into high-interest debt with none of the protections medical debt carries. Financial assistance shrinks the total itself. Only set up a plan for whatever is left after assistance is applied.
